How much will a custom cake cost?
Base prices start at $4.00 per serving for single tier cakes, and $5.50 per serving for tiered cakes.
In all cakes, this includes the design of your cake, your choice of cake flavour and filling for each tier (every tier 8″ and up can be a different flavour), chocolate ganache covering, fondant or buttercream decor, basic piping including borders, ingredients/allergen disclosure, and cutting guide. Tiered cakes include a thick cake board or use of our custom stacking system, and all internal support.
Sugar flowers, monograms/edible rhinestones, more intricate decorating details and certain decorating styles such as airbrushing will incur additional decorating charges. Custom cakes have a $100 minimum.
How much cake do I need?
Once you decide how many guests you would like to serve (dependant on whether there will be other desserts served) , I will present you with a number of alternatives for your cake size. Unless you request extra servings, the cake design will be sized as close to the number of portions required.
Our cutting guides are based on industry standard: 1″ x 2″ x height of cake (4″ minimum)
What is the process for ordering a custom cake/dessert?
In order to design and create your perfect dessert, there are some key things we need to know. When you make an enquiry, please let us know:
- The date of your event
- The venue, AND the location at the venue where the cake/dessert will be displayed (inside vs outside)
- Your expected guest count
- Whether you will serve the cake as your dessert course, or if it will be served alongside a dessert buffet.
- Whether you wish to keep your top tier (applicable for tiered wedding cakes only)
- Your budget
- Ideas of what you would like for the style of your cake/dessert – please send photos!
Please email us the above details, first and foremost. We will check our availability right away and let you know if we can help. If we do have availability for your date, we will provide you a rough estimate of price.
Please note that we operate on a first in, first served basis. A retainer of $100 is required to secure your booking. Once you have signed off on your quote and cake contract, and have paid your retainer, you are considered booked in.
Is there anything I CAN’T have on my cake?
Due to international copyright laws and a respect for intellectual property, I will not do any copyrighted characters, logos, products etc. This includes ‘name brand’ bags, Disney characters, and perfume/clothing company logos, UNLESS you provide me with written permission from the copyright/trademark owner. There have been instances in the past years of these brands taking issue with cake designers who replicate their products. I can however create a cake suitable to the theme, and you are welcome to place a purchased licensed product (ie. a toy) on your cake.
Can I decorate my cake with fresh flowers?
Possibly. Most commercial flowers are grown using pesticides, or are grown overseas where the sanitation standards might not align with what we would be consider to be food-safe. As well, many varieties of flowers are toxic themselves, and should not be used to decorate a cake. Therefore, any fresh flowers placed on a cake must be organically grown AND of a non-toxic variety.
For cake toppers, most florists can make a topper arrangement where the flowers themselves won’t touch the cake. We can of course make gum paste flowers for you. This also ensures that your cake is safe to eat, and that the entire cake is able to be utilized, having no holes left from the water vials.
Do you offer gluten free/vegan/egg-free/nut-free cakes?
Our kitchen processes eggs, nuts, soy, dairy products and wheat products on a daily basis. The incidence of allergic and anaphylactic reactions to food allergens is increasing and cannot be taken lightly. Due to public health and safety, and cross-contamination considerations, we have made the decision to no longer supply allergen-free cakes as we cannot in any way guarantee that any special dietary cakes would be free from traces of these allergens.
If you have an allergy or food intolerance, we would advise seeking a specialist baker. They will have strict practices which ensure no traces of allergens will be present in their bakery kitchen, and hence your cake. (We can make cakes and other desserts without nuts and without dairy, but cross contamination of allergens is always a possibility).
How far in advance can I order?
Orders are accepted on a First Come ($100 retainer fee paid and contract sized), first reserved basis. Because The White Apron is a very small cake studio, and we bake/decorate every cake to order, we can only take on a limited number of orders for every given day. We currently have a few 2017 dates remaining, and are taking bookings for 2018.
Even if it is fairly short notice, please do contact us as we do often have a few weekends with openings remaining. (For custom cakes, we ask for a minimum 3 weeks notice so that we can work it into our work schedule.)
Do you offer tastings?
We do! Our basic tasting costs $35 (by appointment), and includes several small samples of our chocolate, vanilla and one other cake, and a selection of fillings/icings served on the side. These samples can be done as part of an onsite consultation at our Naramata cake studio, or can be picked up to be sampled at home. The tasting exists so that you will be confident in your choice to have us bake your perfect cake; it is not a sampling of all of our menu flavours. Tastings are only available for cake orders of $300 or more.
How many flavors can I choose for my cake?
When you order a tiered cake, you can choose one flavour for the whole cake, or a different cake/filling flavour for every tier (8″ or larger)! Keep in mind that if selecting more than one flavour, however, you will likely need more portions of cake, as some guests will want to sample several different flavours.
- A quarter sheet (8″x12″) serves up to 25 and starts at $60.
- A half sheet (12″x16″) cake serves up to 50 and starts at $115.
- A full sheet cake (16″ x 24″) serves 100 and starts at $225.
Do you offer consultations?
We do! We offer complimentary in-person consultations on all wedding cakes 40 portions or larger, at our kitchen in Naramata. This is a great way for us to meet you, and get a complete understanding of the cake you would like. Feel free to bring along pictures of your dress, samples of your invitations, colour swatches, and photos of cake inspiration. We can do a cake tasting at this time (fee applies) if you wish. Please feel free to bring pictures of your decor, dress, color swatches, cakes you love or anything else that inspires you. During the wedding season, consultations are available Monday-Thursday daytimes/evening, or on weekend evenings. During off season we can accommodate weekend appointments as well.
Do you deliver?
We certainly do. We include local free (Naramata Bench) delivery for all orders $100 or more. We can deliver outside of this area for $50 (Penticton city centre), or $75 for outskirts (Penticton outskirts, Kaleden, Okanagan Falls, Summerland). Ask us about delivery availability and fees to destinations further than this.
