I’ve never ordered a custom cake before. How does it work?
All of our cakes come a standard 4″ high – each tier of cake contains layers of cake and 3 layers of filling for standard cakes (with buttercream, or with buttercream/fondant or ganache/fondant on the outside). Our semi naked cakes contain three layers of cake and two layers of filling.
When you are putting together your cake, you can either select one Signature Cake flavour, or Mix and Match (choose your own cake, cake soak, filling and buttercream). For example, you can have a chocolate cake with espresso soak, with espresso buttercream filling. Cakes are generally covered with vanilla buttercream, although there are several flavours we can add that won’t affect the colour.
Tiered cakes are made by tiers of cakes with dowels inserted into the cake, which are used to support the cake above. Each tier of cake has a cardboard round underneath it. You simply tell us how many servings you need, and give us some ideas of how you want your cake to look (both in size, number of tiers, final design) and then we will do up a sketch and a quote. If you decide to book, you will sign a contract and pay a retainer to hold the date.
I would like a taller cake. How is this done?
If your looking for a taller cake (within one tier) there a couple different options – you can add in an extra layer of cake per tier (giving you a 6″ tall tier). Or you can double the height of the tier, which means we essentially stack a second cake of the same size onto the first cake! While adding an extra layer doesn’t increase the number of servings (it just makes for a larger portion size), using a double barrelled cake does give you double the servings. For example a standard 6″, will give you 12 servings, each 4″ tall. A double barrel 6″ will be twice as high (8″ total) and give you 24 servings total. Our cake servings are based off of 1″ x 2″ x 4″ high servings, the servings amounts are all dependent on how the cake is cut.
How much will a custom cake cost?
Every cake is a unique price, as price is determined by size, flavours/materials used, and design. Prices start at $4.75/serving for naked cakes, $5/serving for buttercream, and $6/serving for fondant. Standard pricing is based on one cake flavour, a buttercream filling, and vanilla buttercream on the outside. See the Menu page for more detail.
We have a $100 order minimum on any custom cake order.
In all cakes, your final price includes the design of your cake, your choice of cake flavour, filling, soak and buttercream, custom decoration, cutting guide, a custom covered thick cake drum, and delivery if requested/required.
How much cake do I need?
Typically if cake is your only dessert you would allow for one serving per guest (order a few more servings, as some of the portions of cake will have dowel holes in them so you may or may not opt to serve those). If you are having another dessert option we recommend 70% of the servings to guest count.
We also recommend keeping the flavour combinations to a minimum. The more options you have, the more likely it is that guests will try more then one. This will affect your numbers for ordering. The above recommendations are based on offering one cake flavour.
Once you decide how many servings you will need, we will present you with a number of alternatives for your cake size. Unless you request extra servings, the cake design will be sized as close to the number of portions required.
Can I save my top tier for my anniversary?
If you wish, you certainly can. However, we would rather that you eat a delicious fresh cake for your anniversary – we will make a small 6″ cake for your anniversary for only $30, in the likeness of your wedding cake (for all wedding orders $300+) if desired.
Where can I display my cake?
Cakes and icing contain a lot of butter, which is most stable when cold or room temperature. If you are displaying your cake outside in the summer sun, it must be set up in the shade or under a tent. You might be limited to certain fillings/icings/decor, and we would recommend that the cake only be moved into its display location for as short a time as possible. You might be best off to have a dummy cake (made of styrofoam) made for display and to serve a kitchen cake.
How do I store this cake?
Your cake is perfectly happy to sit out for a full day on the counter, any longer and we recommend storing in the fridge (in a residential fridge – if going into a commercial fridge, it would need to be boxed first). Any leftovers freeze very well (double wrapped in plastic wrapped and then into tupperware).
Is there anything I CAN’T have on my cake?
Due to international copyright laws and a respect for intellectual property, I will not do any copyrighted characters, logos, products etc. This includes ‘name brand’ bags, Disney characters, and perfume/clothing company logos, UNLESS you provide me with written permission from the copyright/trademark owner. There have been instances in the past years of these brands taking issue with cake designers who replicate their products. I can however create a cake suitable to the theme, and you are welcome to place a purchased licensed product (ie. a toy) on your cake.
Can you copy *this* cake?
Any photos submitted are fantastic for giving us an idea of what you would like. However, we want your cake to be unique to you and your event, and we will not attempt to 100% replicate a cake made by a different cake artist. We can certainly use it for inspiration though!
Can I decorate my cake with fresh flowers?
Possibly. Most commercial flowers are grown using pesticides, or are grown overseas where the sanitation standards might not align with what we would be consider to be food-safe. As well, many varieties of flowers are toxic themselves, and should not be used to decorate a cake. Therefore, any fresh flowers placed on a cake must be organically grown AND of a non-toxic variety.
Fresh floral placement starts at 20.00 and does not include floral. Floral is available upon request.
Do you offer gluten free/vegan/egg-free/nut-free cakes?
Our kitchen processes eggs, nuts, soy, dairy products and wheat products on a daily basis. Due to public health and safety, and cross-contamination considerations, we have made the decision to no longer supply allergen-free cakes as we cannot in any way guarantee that any special dietary cakes would be free from traces of these allergens.
How far in advance can I order?
Orders are accepted on a First Come ($100 retainer fee paid and contract sized), first reserved basis. Because The White Apron is a very small cake studio, and we bake/decorate every cake to order, we can only take on a limited number of orders for every given date. We start consultations and bookings a year in advance. Wedding season of May – September is generally booked up several months in advance.
Do you offer consultations or tastings?
We do! Our basic tasting costs $35 (by appointment), and includes several small samples of our chocolate, vanilla and one other cake, and a selection of fillings/icings served on the side. These samples can be done as part of an onsite consultation at our Naramata cake studio, or can be picked up to be sampled at home. The tasting exists so that you will be confident in your choice to have us bake your perfect cake; it is not a sampling of all of our menu flavours. Tastings are only available for cake orders of $300 or more. Consultations without tastings are complimentary (cakes 50+ servings). All other cakes are designed by email/phone.
Do you do sheet cakes?
While we don’t do grocery-store style sheet cakes, we can do a *kitchen cake* which is essentially an undecorated (basic iced) round cake in the same flavour as your main cake. Slices from the kitchen cake will look exactly like slices from the main cake. Because these cakes are not decorated, they are available for $3.00+/serving. They are only offered for orders accompanying a decorated cutting cake or tiered cake.
Do you deliver?
Yes! Delivery for cakes over 3+ tiers tall is required (smaller cakes may be picked up).
Wedding cakes are typically just before the ceremony begins. Ceremony locations, reception rooms and times are all very important to making sure everything arrives on time! Include these details in your order to us! If you are opting to pick up your cake, before noon or after 5:00 are our pick up hours on weekends. Monday to Thursday pick up times are more flexible. Delivery starts at $50.00 within 20km of our Naramata kitchen and $2.00 per each additional kilometre one way.
How do I book?
To officially book in we take a $100 non-refundable retainer, and the remaining amount is due one month before the event. Once a quote has been given, the quote is guaranteed for one month. After this time the quote is subject to price increases/review. A booking is not guaranteed until the retainer is paid and contract signed. If another request comes in for your date while your quote is active but hasn’t been retained, you will have 24hours to determine if you want to retain the date.
If you are unsure about the number of servings you will need, the quantity can be adjusted closer to the event date. For a decrease in size, up to one month prior to the event the order can be decreased by 25% serving numbers without a penalty. If more then 25% the charge will be equal to 50% of the decreased dollar value.
Do you have a minimum order?
Yes, $100 (not including delivery/rentals/tax).
What methods of payment do you accept?
Cash, e-transfer and certified cheque
